2014 US Flag Stamp the Star-Spangled Banner

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service today showcased the Forever Star-Spangled Banner Stamp during a special ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, home to the 15-star, 15-stripe flag that inspired the national anthem.
“We’re here today to honor our country’s most powerful symbols, our flag, and our national anthem,” said Kristin Seaver, vice president, of Area Operations, Capital Metro Area, U.S. Postal Service. “When a young poet named Francis Scott Key saw those broad stripes and bright stars still waving at dawn on the top of Fort McHenry during the battle of Baltimore, he was so inspired, he put pen to paper and wrote the words that eventually became our national anthem.
“It’s impossible to look at this image and not feel proud and patriotic,” said Seaver. “Let the stamp serve as a small reminder of a very big idea that in America, our flag isn’t just a patchwork of colored fabric. It’s a powerful symbol of our history, our heritage, and the common ground we all share.”
Joining Seaver to dedicate the stamp were John Gray, director, of Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History; Jennifer Locke Jones, chair and curator, of the Division of Armed Forces History, National Museum of American History; Tina Cappetta, superintendent, of Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine; Phil Jordan and Gary Clark, the Forever Star-Spangled Banner stamp’s art director, and photographer, respectively; and Ted Wilson, registrar, Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum.
Issued on Jan. 28, the stamp was featured at the museum to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” The formats available are a booklet of 20 stamps, a coil of 100 stamps, and an ATM sheetlet of 18 stamps.
This stamp design features a photograph of the flag that flies over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore, MD. This flag is a replica of the one that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” after realizing Fort McHenry had withstood the British attack of Sept.13-14, 1814.
The picture of the flag was taken against a backdrop of fireworks during an annual celebration of Defenders’Day, a legal holiday in the state of Maryland commemorating the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on Sept. 12, 1814, from an invading British force during the War of 1812.
Photographer Gary Clark said it was a challenge to get the fireworks and the flag in the same shot and that “the wind picked up quite a bit that night.” Art director Phil Jordan designed the stamp.
The Star-Spangled Banner stamp is being issued as a Forever Stamp, which is equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.

2016 - Patriotic Spiral Stamps

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service will issue the Patriotic Spiral First-Class Forever stamps in booklets of 10 for consumers and self-adhesive coils of 10,000 for businesses. Both formats will be available on August 19 nationwide and will be issued formally that day in Falls Church, VA, in booklet format, and in Kansas City, MO, in large coil format.
On August 19, 2016, the U.S. Postal Service issued the Patriotic Spiral stamps in Falls Church, VA. This festive and energetic stamp design features 50 blue and red stars spiraling around a central gold star on a white background.
The idea for the design was to illustrate a community of stars protectively orbiting a central star that in an abstract sense stands for our nation’s steadfast idealism and hope for a more perfect union.
Antonio Alcalá art directed the project with stamp design and typography by Polygraph, a Washington, D.C. design firm. This listing is for a cut strip of 50 stamps, cut from a larger roll.
Throughout its history, liberty and freedom have been the defining principles of the United States of America. The stars of our nation’s flag represent fifty separate states united by these principles and the patriots who fought for them.
The Patriotic Spiral forever stamp was announced on Aug. 3. It is being issued on Aug. 19 in two formats: booklets of 10 for consumers and in coils of 10,000 for businesses. Both the booklet and the coil stamps are self-adhesive.
The booklet format is being issued in Falls Church, Va., and the coil stamps in Kansas City, Mo. Americover is taking place Aug. 19-21 in Falls Church.

One of the best methods scientists use to learn about songbirds is bird banding. After going through special training, researchers capture wild birds and place a small aluminum band on their legs. Each band is inscribed with a different number unique to that bird. If another person later captures the same bird, they simply record the band number along with the bird’s other data. From 1960-2016, the United States alone has banded: 218,149 golden-crowned kinglets; 174,598 cedar waxwings; 490,531 northern cardinals; and 52,949 red-breasted nuthatches.

As early as 2000, the World Wildlife Fund and Wildlife Conservation Society proposed the U.S. Post create a semi-postal stamp to help raise money for wildlife conservation. Their efforts paid off when Congress passed the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Semi-postal Stamp Act of 2010.
Issued on September 20, 2011, the semi-postal stamp pictures an Amur tiger. Also known as the Siberian tiger, the Amur once roamed Western and Central Asia. Their organs and bones, used in Asian medicine, and their lush pelts made them a profitable target for poachers.
During the 20th century, the Amur tiger vanished from several nations and its wild population became nearly extinct throughout the region. Today, only a few hundred are known to roam freely. The image of an Amur tiger cub was made by Nancy Stahl, the artist behind more than 20 US postage stamps. She used photographs of the species as inspiration for the stamp.
The Save Vanishing Species semi-postal stamp sold for 11¢ more than the first-class postage rate at the time. The additional funds were given to the US Fish and Wildlife Service to support worldwide conservation efforts. They, in turn, gave the funds to the Wildlife Without Borders program, which funds conservation efforts, both inside and outside the US. The program issues grants to five different multinational groups involved in protecting elephants, rhinoceros, tigers, marine turtles, and great apes. By joining conservation agencies from around the world, the United States is able to cross borders to reverse the threat of extinction to these animals.
According to a WWF representative, “This is an easy way for individuals to use their purchasing power to help save vanishing species every time they mail a letter. By purchasing these stamps, anyone can play a direct role in protecting some of our most iconic and endangered wildlife.”
The original law made the stamp available from September 2011 until December 2013. During that time, over 25 million stamps were sold, raising over $2.75 million dollars. In 2014, President Obama signed a bill reauthorizing the Save Vanishing Species stamp to continue sales through 2018. As of July 2018, the stamp has raised over $5.2 million.

The northern cardinal is a bright red songbird that is a favorite among all birders. With these five Bonsai (Forever) stamps, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates the beauty of bonsai. The word “bonsai” (China for “plant in a pot”) refers to the art of cultivating plants — usually trees — in trays, pots, or other containers. Favorite bonsai plants include evergreens, maples, and azaleas, but many other trees and shrubs are also suitable.
One of the common styles of bonsai is shown on each of these five stamps.
The first stamp depicts a Sierra juniper in a semi-cascade style, in which the tip projects over the pot rim but does not extend below the base.
Second is a trident maple in informal upright style, in which the trunk bends slightly to the left or right.
The third is a black pine in formal upright style, with the trunk straight and tapering evenly, with symmetrical branches, from base to apex.
Fourth is an azalea plant in multiple-trunk style, with several trunks emerging from one root system.
The fifth and final stamp shows a banyan in cascade style, in which the trunk evokes a stream flowing down a mountainside, with the tip extending below the pot’s base.
The plants depicted are roughly 15 to 20 inches tall.
The bonsai collection at the National Arboretum began in 1976 when the Nippon Bonsai Association in Tokyo, Japan, presented the people of the United States with 53 plants as part of the U.S. bicentennial commemoration.
A bonsai master begins with seeds, cuttings, a naturally stunted tree, or a very young tree. Over time, he or she prunes the roots and branches, uses wire to shape and “train” the branches, and sometimes scrapes or peels bark to achieve desired effects. The plant is watered and repotted when necessary and can live a hundred years or more.

The California dogface butterfly (Zerene Eurydice) is only found in California and was designated as that state’s official state insect in 1972. The male butterfly shows striking colors and wing patterns resembling a poodle’s face in profile which gives it its unusual name. The female displays subdued soft yellows with a single small dark spot on each forewing.

Christmas Carols Stamps - 2017

The United States Postal Service will issue a four-stamp set celebrating popular Christmas carols on the opening day of the American Stamp Dealers Association’s Fall Postage Stamps Show in New York City.
The non-denominated (49¢) forever stamps each depict a scene and a phrase evoking one of four Christmas songs: Deck the Halls, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.
Familiar lines from each song highlight the individual stamps. Shades of blue in the stamp backgrounds are intended to evoke the evening scenes from the four carols. While not forming a unified design, the adjacent quadrants in each stamp appear to form a Christmas ball.
The self-adhesive stamps will be issued in a double-sided pane of 20, which the Postal Service describes as a booklet. A first-day ceremony has been scheduled for noon on Oct. 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown, 1335 Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue and W. 53rd Street).
Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.

Colorado Hairstreak Stamps(Non-Machineable for Square Envelopes)

These colorful square non-machineable surcharge colorado hairstreak stamps were developed in collaboration with the greeting card industry. Its uses are on irregular-size envelopes. Such as square greeting cards, RSVP envelopes often enclosed with wedding invitations, party invitations, thank-you notes, announcements, or any other irregularly sized correspondence. So the Colorado hairstreak butterfly graces the eighth non-machineable butterfly stamp.
The stamp art was digitally created using images of preserved butterflies as a starting point. The result is a highly stylized, simplified image of a Colorado hairstreak rather than an exact replica.
The shimmering purple Colorado hairstreak butterfly dwells in the forest canopy of that state and much of the Southwest. Never venturing far from its host plant, the Gambel oak, it feeds on tree sap and fallen raindrops.
The Colorado hairstreak – Colorado’s official state insect – has slender, hair-like, hind-wing appendages that resemble antennae. Nearby, on the underside of the wings, are spots that look like eyes and the thin streaks that give the hairstreak its name. Pointing its abdomen upward with false antennae held high, the butterfly’s evolutionary decoys fool predators into attacking the false head on the wing. A hungry bird ends up with an unsatisfying beakful of the scaly wing.
In autumn, after mating, the female lays her eggs. The plump, green caterpillar hatches in spring and feeds on tender new oak leaves. After metamorphosis, the Colorado hairstreak butterfly, with a wingspan of about 1 inch, darts in and out of the tree branches in quick, erratic flight.
These envelopes cannot pass through the automated Postal processing system and have to be hand-canceled. They are charged a non-machineable surcharge even if they weigh less than one ounce. Greeting card envelopes printed with a silhouette of a butterfly indicate the need for the use of a butterfly stamp. Any non-machineable envelope, like oddly shaped or vertical envelopes, as well as lumpy envelopes, rigid envelopes, or mail with clasps, ribbons, or buttons, may use this stamp.
Colorado Hairstreak stamps is available in sheets of twenty. The words “NON-MACHINEABLE SURCHARGE” on the stamp indicate its usage value.

In 622, the Muslims left their homes in Mecca because of religious persecution and settled in Medina. They raided caravans along the trade route to Mecca as a means of economic survival and as revenge for being forced from their homes.
During the spring of 624, 1,000 camels laden with goods were headed to Mecca. Muhammad and his small army of 313 men set out for the oasis at Badr to intercept the caravan. When the nobles in Mecca found out about the planned raid, they joined forces to protect their possessions.
The two armies met, with the Meccan forces three times as numerous as Muhammad’s troops. Three champions from each side fought first, and all three men from Mecca were killed. A full-scale attack followed. The Muslim holy book, the Quran, reports thousands of angels came from Heaven and terrorized the enemy. The large army fled. This victory increased the prophet’s reputation and led to the expansion of Islam.
Muhammad’s men, who had fasted before battle, feasted that evening. Today, Muslims celebrate the breaking of fasts with Eid festivities of their own.

Eugenie Clark Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service honors pioneering marine biologist Eugenie Clark (1922–2015) with the release of a new commemorative stamp. Affectionately known as the “Shark Lady,” Clark conducted many important studies that provided fascinating insights into shark biology and worked tirelessly to change public perception about sharks.
The stamp art features a digital collage created by multidisciplinary artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. Phingbodhipakkiya’s design includes a photograph of Clark taken by David Doubilet as well as a photograph of a lemon shark taken by Reinhard Dirscherl. Wavy blue elements in the stamp’s background evoke an undersea scene.
Clark earned the nickname “Shark Lady” for her well-publicized work as director of the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory (now the Mote Marine Laboratory) on Florida’s west coast from 1955 to 1967. In a series of groundbreaking experiments, Clark demonstrated that lemon sharks could be trained to do complex tasks and debunked myths about sharks as vicious, fearsome creatures. She also made significant contributions to the study of hermaphroditism in fishes.
A prolific scientist animated by an unyielding sense of curiosity, Clark carried out more than 200 expeditions across the globe during her career. One of her most unforgettable moments occurred in 1973. At the request of local divers, Clark traveled to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to study a group of requiem sharks that appeared to be sleeping at the bottom of an undersea cave. After 99 subsequent dives, Clark and her team determined that they had discovered a “cleaning station,” an area where water conditions caused parasites to release their grip from the motionless sharks. Their discovery helped disprove the notion that some shark species must keep swimming in order to survive.
Clark’s enthusiasm for sharks and for the preservation of marine environments around the world was infectious. She published more than 175 scholarly and popular scientific articles and narrated several film and television documentaries. Crowds of fascinated listeners of all ages packed her public talks. For her contributions to marine science, she received the Franklin L. Burr Award from the National Geographic Society, the Explorers Club Medal, and the Medal of Excellence from the American Society of Oceanographers, among numerous other recognitions.

Flowers from the Garden Stamps - 2017

The four designs show red camellias and yellow forsythia in a yellow pitcher; white peonies and pink tree peonies in a clear vase; blue hydrangeas in a blue pot; and white hydrangeas, white and pink roses, green hypericum berries, and purple lisianthus in a white pitcher.
The still-life paintings that illustrate the stamps are by artist Elizabeth Brandon.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, the paintings were “inspired by floral still lifes created by Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th and 18th centuries.”

On May 23, 2011, at Yew Dell Gardens in Crestwood, Kentucky, near Louisville, the Postal Service™ will issue a Garden of Love definitive stamp (Forever® priced at 44 cents), in 10 designs in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps (Item 576100). The designs depict an abstract garden of bright flowers, a butterfly, and a strawberry and doves, interlaced with vines that run from one stamp to another. Each prominent element of the design is in the shape of a heart. The deep blue background is reminiscent of a brilliant summer sky. The word “Love” sits atop each stamp. This issuance is a continuation of the popular Love series introduced by the Postal Service in 1973. Jose Ortega of New York City, New York, and Toronto, Canada, illustrated the stamps under the direction of Derry Noyes, Washington, DC.

The Postal Service™ will re-issue the non-denominated First-Class Mail® definitive, Forever Liberty Bell stamps on October 25, 2008, in New York, New York, in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) folded vending booklet of 20 stamps. The stamp, designed by Carl T. Herrman of Carlsbad, California, also goes on sale nationwide on October 25, 2008.
The stamp was first issued in 2007. The forever stamp will always be valid as first-class postage on standard envelopes weighing one ounce or less, regardless of any subsequent increases in the first-class rate.
The stamp art depicts the liberty bell, which is perhaps the most prominent and recognizable symbol associated with American independence. Over the years, the historic significance of the bell’s message has transcended our national borders, and today the liberty bell is an international icon of freedom. Replicas of the liberty bell exist in all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

George Morrison Stamps

George Morrison (1919-2000) is considered the grandfather of Native modernism. A member of the Minnesota Chippewa tribe and the post-war abstract expressionists, he blended his worlds to trailblaze a new art form.
Morrison grew up along the shores of Lake Superior in Chippewa City, Minnesota. As a boy, he enjoyed collecting driftwood and crafting toys and trinkets for tourists. Bedridden for 14 months following a surgery to treat tuberculosis, he discovered a love of art that shaped his future.
After studying at the Minnesota School of Art, Morrison went to New York’s famed Art Students League. In the bustling city, he explored cubism and surrealism and joined a group of abstract expressionists who were reinventing art. Morrison earned wide recognition for his abstract works.
In the 1960s, Morrison grew homesick and returned to his childhood hobby of collecting driftwood. He used that driftwood to create award-winning sculptures and collages he called “paintings in wood.” They were so popular, they often sold before they were even finished. In the 1970s, Morrison returned to Minnesota to teach. He built a home on the shore of Lake Superior and captured the lake’s beauty that changed with the time of day, season, and weather.
Morrison earned many awards and was the first Native American to have his art displayed at the White House. In 2022, he earned a rare honor enjoyed by a few artists – five of his paintings were featured on US postage stamps. Fittingly, the stamps were first issued in Grand Portage, Minnesota, where Morrison spent the last 30 years of his life.

Known as the “Queen of the Fall Flowers” mums (as they are popularly called) are one of America’s favorite garden, cut, and container plants. First mentioned in Chinese literature as early as the 15th century B.C., chrysanthemums are members of the vast Asteraceae family.
The wild variety in China was a small yellow flower used in herbal remedies. Today there are hundreds of chrysanthemum cultivars. Among the many different types of chrysanthemum blooms are cushion, daisy, decorative, pompom, and spider. Chrysanthemum flowers come in many colors, including lime green, bronze, rust, maroon, white, yellow, and purple.
The fall-blooming chrysanthemum symbolizes joy and optimism in the face of the oncoming winter months, and the flowers are popular worldwide. Highly revered in Japan since the eighth century, the chrysanthemum is used on the seal and crest of the country’s emperor. Japan’s National Chrysanthemum Day, also called the Festival of Happiness, celebrates the beloved plant’s importance to Japanese culture.
In parts of the world, the flower is brewed into a tea that is believed to remedy various ailments. According to the popular practice of feng shui—the art of creating harmony and balance within a surrounding environment—mums are believed to bring good luck to the home. Among Australians, chrysanthemums are the flower of choice for sending on Mother’s Day, which falls in May, an autumn month in the Southern Hemisphere. In the U.S., mums are November’s birth flower, and they are the official flower of the city of Chicago. They are also the flower designated to celebrate a 13th wedding anniversary.

The Green Succulent stamps are the sixth in an ongoing series of round global Stamps. The first, showing a view of Earth from space, was issued on Jan. 28, 2013.
The round shape of these stamps, along with the inscription “Global,” was initially intended to distinguish it as postage for international letter mail rather than domestic letter mail.

Holiday Elves Stamps

The Holiday Elves Stamps art features an original digital illustration of four elves preparing treats and toys for holiday gift giving. The artist first sketched his design and then created the final illustration digitally. Working with a simple color palette of red, white, and shades of green and brown, he evokes the holiday spirit in the playful, happy scene.
Like many beloved yet relatively modern holiday traditions—including Santa Claus himself—elves did not become a well-established part of the holidays in the United States until the 19th century.
Published in 1823, the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”—better known as“Twas the Night Before Christmas”—refers to Santa as“a jolly old elf”but there is no mention of other elves. Louisa May Alcott might have been the first to mention Santa’s helpers, in an unpublished story collection called Christmas Elves in 1855, but few details of the lost work are known. In 1857, Harper’s Weekly published the poem“The Wonders of Santa Claus”that specifically referred to elves helping Santa create all the gifts he delivers to good children during the holidays. The 1873 Christmas issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular magazine, pictured Santa Claus, surrounded by elves and toys, preparing for the big day.
In the 20th century, Norman Rockwell, Haddon Sundblom, and other artists featured elves in some of their popular seasonal illustrations. Holiday Elves were pictured as tiny, pointy-eared, jolly creatures, usually dressed in stocking caps and festive outfits and always busy with chores for Santa—just as we envision them today.
Don Clark was the stamps designer and artist. Antonio Alcalá was the art director.

Holiday Windows Stamps - 2016

NEW YORK CITY — A new booklet of Forever stamps entitled Holiday Windows was dedicated today, making it clear that the holidays are right around the corner. These festive holiday contemporary stamps represent one of the major issues for the 2016 holiday mailing season.
“These new stamps will help people celebrate the holidays with style – whether applied to letters, cards or packages, they will welcome recipients with greetings and good cheer,” Postal Service Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President Joseph Corbett noted. “It’s our hope that these inviting stamps will help customers connect with the festive spirit of the season.”
With four warms, and inviting illustrations of winter scenes featuring windows, the Holiday Windows stamps rejoice in the simple pleasures of the season. Two stamp designs show views from the inside looking out: a single burning candle sits on a sill and a simple star ornament hangs from a hook attached to the window sash, out of sight. Two other stamp designs show views from the outside looking in: a brightly lit Christmas tree contrasts with the snowy shrubs on the other side of the glass and a snow-covered wreath hangs in front of frosted windowpanes.
The Holiday Windows stamps are being issued as Forever stamps. These Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.

Holiday Wreaths Stamps 2019

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service announced today that this year’s contemporary holiday stamps will highlight wreaths to welcome the season. The Holiday Wreaths Forever stamps will be issued later this fall, providing plenty of time for mailing greeting cards. Details will be announced soon. These stamps will be among several holiday-themed stamps that will be available this year.
Displayed on a door, in a window, or over a mantel, wreaths are symbols of joy and celebration, inviting the spirit of the season into the home.
Inspired by the holiday decorating traditions of early America, the four wreaths featured on these stamps are classic yet contemporary. Their designs create feelings of warmth and welcome. Wreaths are often made from materials easily found during the winter months, including pinecones, dried flowers, and berries.
Here’s more information about the stamps pattern of each wreath:
(top left) The ribbon leaf wreath is inspired by French floral art. Aspidistra leaves, folded and manipulated to resemble ribbons, create a long-lasting wreath.
(top right) Gilded pinecones and magnolia pods grace the wreath trimmed with cranberry red ribbon.
(lower left) Red and gold ribbon adorns the wreath made from gilded dried hydrangea, eucalyptus and nandina foliage, red berries, and small ornaments.
(lower right) The woodland bush ivy and red winterberry wreath present a classic red and green palette.

Antonio Alcalá served as the art director for these stamps and designed them with floral artist Laura Dowling. Dowling designed the wreaths for the stamps, which were photographed by Kevin Allen.
It is the first official mention of new U.S. holiday stamps for 2019. The stamps will be issued in double-sided panes of 20, which the Postal Service identifies as a booklet.
