The Postal Service is issuing two Forever stamps that are perfect for mailing anniversaries, birthdays, proms, and other life-celebrating invitations enclosed with RSVP cards.
The new Celebration Corsage two-ounce Forever stamp can accommodate the weight of heavy invitations for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and other celebrations, oversized greeting cards for all occasions, and mailings such as small gifts that require extra postage. The stamp image is a photograph of an arrangement of ranunculus with accents of hypericum berry, Astrantia, and seed eucalyptus.
Similar in design to the new two-ounce Celebration Corsage stamps, the Celebration Boutonniere First-Class Forever stamp can be used for wedding RSVP cards. It is also perfect for party invitations, thank-you notes, announcements, birthday cards, Father’s Day cards, and other occasions when a beautiful stamp is fitting. The celebration boutonniere stamps art features a photograph of an arrangement of ranunculus, with floral accents of succulents, Astrantia, Berzelia, and clubmoss greenery.
Both stamps were arranged by floral designer Carol Caggiano and photographed by Renée Comet. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp.

Bonsai Trees Stamp - 2012

With these five Bonsai (Forever) stamps, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates the beauty of bonsai. The word “bonsai” (China for “plant in a pot”) refers to the art of cultivating plants — usually trees — in trays, pots, or other containers. Favorite bonsai plants include evergreens, maples, and azaleas, but many other trees and shrubs are also suitable.
One of the common styles of bonsai is shown on each of these five stamps.
The first stamp depicts a Sierra juniper in a semi-cascade style, in which the tip projects over the pot rim but does not extend below the base.
Second is a trident maple in informal upright style, in which the trunk bends slightly to the left or right.
The third is a black pine in formal upright style, with the trunk straight and tapering evenly, with symmetrical branches, from base to apex.
Fourth is an azalea plant in multiple-trunk style, with several trunks emerging from one root system.
The fifth and final stamp shows a banyan in cascade style, in which the trunk evokes a stream flowing down a mountainside, with the tip extending below the pot’s base.
The plants depicted are roughly 15 to 20 inches tall.
The bonsai collection at the National Arboretum began in 1976 when the Nippon Bonsai Association in Tokyo, Japan, presented the people of the United States with 53 plants as part of the U.S. bicentennial commemoration.
A bonsai master begins with seeds, cuttings, a naturally stunted tree, or a very young tree. Over time, he or she prunes the roots and branches, uses wire to shape and “train” the branches, and sometimes scrapes or peels bark to achieve desired effects. The plant is watered and repotted when necessary and can live a hundred years or more.
Art director and stamps designer Ethel Kessler worked with artist John D. Dawson on the “Bonsai” stamps.

Known as the “Queen of the Fall Flowers” mums (as they are popularly called) are one of America’s favorite garden, cut, and container plants. First mentioned in Chinese literature as early as the 15th century B.C., chrysanthemums are members of the vast Asteraceae family.
The wild variety in China was a small yellow flower used in herbal remedies. Today there are hundreds of chrysanthemum cultivars. Among the many different types of chrysanthemum blooms are cushion, daisy, decorative, pompom, and spider. Chrysanthemum flowers come in many colors, including lime green, bronze, rust, maroon, white, yellow, and purple.
The fall-blooming chrysanthemum symbolizes joy and optimism in the face of the oncoming winter months, and the flowers are popular worldwide. Highly revered in Japan since the eighth century, the chrysanthemum is used on the seal and crest of the country’s emperor. Japan’s National Chrysanthemum Day, also called the Festival of Happiness, celebrates the beloved plant’s importance to Japanese culture.
In parts of the world, the flower is brewed into a tea that is believed to remedy various ailments. According to the popular practice of feng shui—the art of creating harmony and balance within a surrounding environment—mums are believed to bring good luck to the home. Among Australians, chrysanthemums are the flower of choice for sending on Mother’s Day, which falls in May, an autumn month in the Southern Hemisphere. In the U.S., mums are November’s birth flower, and they are the official flower of the city of Chicago. They are also the flower designated to celebrate a 13th wedding anniversary.
The art director was William J. Gicker. Greg Breeding designed the Chrysanthemum Global Stamps with an existing photograph by Hong Vo.

Global Green Succulent Stamps - 2017

The newest issue in the series of round global forever stamps from the United States Postal Service features a green succulent plant known as the echeveria.
The global forever stamps can be used to mail a 1-ounce letter to any country where first-class international mail service is available, regardless of future rate changes.
The central stamp’s design is described as an existing photograph by Erika Kirkpatrick of the echeveria, a succulent native to the Americas often kept as an ornamental plant in the United States.
The stamp was designed by Greg Breeding, and William J. Gicker was the art director for the project.
The Green Succulent stamps are the sixth in an ongoing series of round global Stamps. The first, showing a view of Earth from space, was issued on Jan. 28, 2013.
The round shape of these stamps, along with the inscription “Global,” was initially intended to distinguish it as postage for international letter mail rather than domestic letter mail.

Holiday Wreaths Stamps 2019

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service announced today that this year’s contemporary holiday stamps will highlight wreaths to welcome the season. The Holiday Wreaths Forever stamps will be issued later this fall, providing plenty of time for mailing greeting cards. Details will be announced soon. These stamps will be among several holiday-themed stamps that will be available this year.
Displayed on a door, in a window, or over a mantel, wreaths are symbols of joy and celebration, inviting the spirit of the season into the home.
Inspired by the holiday decorating traditions of early America, the four wreaths featured on these stamps are classic yet contemporary. Their designs create feelings of warmth and welcome. Wreaths are often made from materials easily found during the winter months, including pinecones, dried flowers, and berries.
Here’s more information about the stamps pattern of each wreath:
(top left) The ribbon leaf wreath is inspired by French floral art. Aspidistra leaves, folded and manipulated to resemble ribbons, create a long-lasting wreath.
(top right) Gilded pinecones and magnolia pods grace the wreath trimmed with cranberry red ribbon.
(lower left) Red and gold ribbon adorns the wreath made from gilded dried hydrangea, eucalyptus and nandina foliage, red berries, and small ornaments.

Neon Celebrate Stamp - 2011

In 2011, in Cleveland, Ohio, the Postal Service issued a Neon Celebrate! special Forever Stamp, in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. The stamp was designed by Phil Jordan, Falls Church, Virginia.
The stamp design is similar to the Neon Celebrate forever stamp issued on March 25, 2011, but the “Forever” and “USA” inscriptions, which appear in the upper left and right corners of the 2011 stamp, have been moved to the lower half of the stamp on the new issue.
Inspired by a visit to the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles, Art Director Phil Jordan began to think about the possibility of using neon to depict a stamp subject. He decided that a “Neon Celebrate!” stamp, with its imagery of vivid colors, fit the bill. The black background of the stamp is reminiscent of a night sky. Like a fireworks display on a summer evening, brilliantly colored images of swirls, circles, and dashes in pink, blue, orange, yellow, and green seem to erupt from the ground to illuminate the darkness. Each letter of the word “Celebrate” and the exclamation point that is part of this stamp’s official title, are highlighted in bright white light.
The stamp was designed by U.S. Post art director Phil Jordan, working with neon artist Michael Flechtner of Van Nuys, Calif.
Around the world, celebrations are a time for family and friends to come together to honor many happy occasions. From birthdays and anniversaries to new jobs and well-deserved retirements, celebrations are a time of joy and togetherness.
Jordan selected fine artist Michael Flechtner to design America’s first neon stamp. Flechtner found his inspiration for the stamp in a fireworks display, noting that “…fireworks, with all their color, light, and motion, was the embodiment of a celebration.”

Winter Fun Stamps

On October 23, 2014, in New York, NY, the U.S. Postal Service® will issue the Winter Fun stamps (Forever® First-Class Mail® priced at 49-cents) in four designs, in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) booklet of 20 stamps (Item 689800).
The stamp went on sale nationwide October 23, 2014.
With four playful designs, Winter Fun stamps celebrate some of the season’s most enjoyable activities: ice-skating, making snow angels, building snowmen, and bird-watching. The art for the ice skaters stamp was painted with acrylic on plywood with a dry brush technique to give the illustration a textured, folk-art feel. The art for the other three stamps was hand-sketched and then digitally manipulated. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps using existing illustrations by Janet Atkinson (ice-skating), Jing Jing Tsong (building snowmen and making snow angels), and Christine Roy (bird-watching).

Summer Harvest Stamps - 2015

On July 11, 2015, in Sacramento, CA, the U.S. Postal Service® will issue the Summer Harvest stamps (Forever® First-Class Mail® priced at 49 cents) in four designs, in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) booklet of 20 stamps.
Every summer, some of America’s favorite foods are in season. The U.S. Postal Service celebrates a few of that favorites-corn, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and watermelons-with four new stamps. Vintage produce advertising, including 19th- and early 20th-century crate labels, seed packets, and catalogs, inspired these stamp designs.
Though not all produce was shipped in wooden crates, the stamp art is especially reminiscent of vintage crate labels. The four stylized labels are drawn in the same color palette of red, black, green, and yellow-orange. The product names are in white lettering at the tops of the four stamps. The word “Forever” is enclosed in a banner centered along the bottom of the stamp; the letters “USA” are to the right of the banner.
After America’s railroads linked the East and West Coasts in the 1870s, growers in agricultural areas could ship their products to locations across the country. To distinguish their wares from other producers, growers commissioned special crate labels from printing houses that employed some of the day’s best graphic artists. The artists created designs that featured clever slogans and unusual styles, though the art did not necessarily relate to the products inside. Illustrations might portray bathing beauties, historic events, landscapes, animals, or the grower’s family.
The Summer Harvest Forever stamps will be issued in booklets of 20. Working with an early concept developed by former art director Richard Sheaff, Antonio Alcalá art directed these stamps. Michael Doret was a designer and artist.

The Muslim prophet Muhammad observed the first Eid (or celebration) with his followers after winning the Battle of Badr.
In 622, the Muslims left their homes in Mecca because of religious persecution and settled in Medina. They raided caravans along the trade route to Mecca as a means of economic survival and as revenge for being forced from their homes.
During the spring of 624, 1,000 camels laden with goods were headed to Mecca. Muhammad and his small army of 313 men set out for the oasis at Badr to intercept the caravan. When the nobles in Mecca found out about the planned raid, they joined forces to protect their possessions.
The two armies met, with the Meccan forces three times as numerous as Muhammad’s troops. Three champions from each side fought first, and all three men from Mecca were killed. A full-scale attack followed. The Muslim holy book, the Quran, reports thousands of angels came from Heaven and terrorized the enemy. The large army fled. This victory increased the prophet’s reputation and led to the expansion of Islam.
Muhammad’s men, who had fasted before battle, feasted that evening. Today, Muslims celebrate the breaking of fasts with Eid festivities of their own.

Jack-O’-Lanterns Stamps - 2016

The tradition of carving Jack-o’-lanterns came from a fear of “Will-o’-the-wisps” from English folklore. Will-o’-the-wisp describes a ghostly or supernatural event called ignis fatuus, or”foolish fire.” Some say it resembles a figure carrying a lantern. Others see just a floating ball of light. Ignis fatuus sightings are most often by travelers at night, especially in swamps or marshes.
These eerie lights would retreat if approached, but followed a person if they turned and walked away. The legend warns against following a Will-o’-the-wisp, as they are said to lead travelers to their death. To ward off these evil spirits, people carved faces into turnips and put candles inside to make them as frightening as possible (they actually resembled Will-o’-the-wisps). This tradition was especially important on Halloween when the barrier between Earth and the spirit world was easily crossed.
Many countries have their own legends about Will-o’-the-wisps. Though scientists have tried to understand how these spectral lights are formed, they have not found a definite answer. Will-o’-the-wisps remains one of the unsolved mysteries of Halloween. They add to the thrill of the night and remind wayward travelers to remain vigilant lest they be lured from safe paths by a Will-o’-the-wisp.

The United States Postal Service will issue a four-stamp set celebrating popular Christmas carols on the opening day of the American Stamp Dealers Association’s Fall Postage Stamps Show in New York City.
The non-denominated (49¢) forever stamps each depict a scene and a phrase evoking one of four Christmas songs: Deck the Halls, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.

Flowers from the Garden Stamps - 2017

A new set of four United States forever stamps with a floral theme will go on sale Aug. 16 in a double-sided pane of 20 and in large coils.
The four designs show red camellias and yellow forsythia in a yellow pitcher; white peonies and pink tree peonies in a clear vase; blue hydrangeas in a blue pot; and white hydrangeas, white and pink roses, green hypericum berries, and purple lisianthus in a white pitcher.
The still-life paintings that illustrate the stamps are by artist Elizabeth Brandon.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, the paintings were “inspired by floral still lifes created by Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th and 18th centuries.”

Sparkling Holidays Stamps - 2018

The United States contemporary Christmas stamps set for 2018 pays tribute to the image of Santa Claus as refined and promoted since 1931 by the company that produces Coca-Cola beverages.
The non-denominated (50¢) forever Sparkling Holidays stamps will be issued on Oct. 11 and offered as a set of four on a double-sided pane of 20 (which the Postal Service identifies as a booklet).
A fifth forever stamp will be featured in a souvenir sheet that includes an extended illustration of Santa admiring a note from a youngster as well as the glass bottle of Coca-Cola left for him on the fireplace mantel.
The die-cut edges of the single stamp in the souvenir sheet crop the scene to show Santa’s face and hands. He is adjusting his eyeglasses with his left hand while holding an open green book with the title Good Boys & Girls in his right hand.
The designs of the stamps and the souvenir sheet are each derived from archived artwork produced by Haddon Sundblom for the Coca-Cola Co. from the 1940s through the early 1960s.

In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed several environmental conservation laws into effect. Among them was the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This act “declared to be the policy of the United States that certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they […] shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.”
When the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was first passed, eight rivers were chosen as the first to be protected by it. They were the Clearwater, Eleven Point, Feather, Rio Grande, Rogue, St. Croix, Salmon, and Wolf Rivers. By 2019, over 200 rivers in 40 states and Puerto Rico were included in the system. The US Postal Service honored 12 of these rivers on postage stamps in 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
Today, various federal and state government agencies, plus private landowners and countless volunteers, work together to preserve all the wonderful qualities of America’s rivers. Together, they ensure trash and pollutants stay far away from the water, as well as preventing man-made structures like dams from diverting natural river flow. Nebraska resident Brad Arrowsmith, who owns part of the land in the Niobrara National Scenic River, described the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act best when he declared, “Boundaries don’t protect rivers, people do.”

Raven Story Forever Postage Stamp

The stamp is inspired by the traditional story of the raven setting the sun, moon, and stars free.
The stamp was created by Tlingit/Athabascan artist Rico Worl. The stamp design depicts a raven just as he escapes from his human family and begins to transform back into his bird form. To create the stamp art, Worl used formline, the traditional design style of the Indigenous people of the northern Northwest Coast. The art director is Antonio Alcalá.

George Morrison Stamps

George Morrison (1919-2000) is considered the grandfather of Native modernism. A member of the Minnesota Chippewa tribe and the post-war abstract expressionists, he blended his worlds to trailblaze a new art form.
Morrison grew up along the shores of Lake Superior in Chippewa City, Minnesota. As a boy, he enjoyed collecting driftwood and crafting toys and trinkets for tourists. Bedridden for 14 months following a surgery to treat tuberculosis, he discovered a love of art that shaped his future.
After studying at the Minnesota School of Art, Morrison went to New York’s famed Art Students League. In the bustling city, he explored cubism and surrealism and joined a group of abstract expressionists who were reinventing art. Morrison earned wide recognition for his abstract works.
In the 1960s, Morrison grew homesick and returned to his childhood hobby of collecting driftwood. He used that driftwood to create award-winning sculptures and collages he called “paintings in wood.” They were so popular, they often sold before they were even finished. In the 1970s, Morrison returned to Minnesota to teach. He built a home on the shore of Lake Superior and captured the lake’s beauty that changed with the time of day, season, and weather.
Morrison earned many awards and was the first Native American to have his art displayed at the White House. In 2022, he earned a rare honor enjoyed by a few artists – five of his paintings were featured on US postage stamps. Fittingly, the stamps were first issued in Grand Portage, Minnesota, where Morrison spent the last 30 years of his life.

Shel SilverStein Forever Stamps

Shel Silverstein (September 25, 1930 – May 10, 1999) was one of America’s most well-known children’s authors. However, he did much more than that. He was also an accomplished illustrator, songwriter, and more.
Sheldon Allan Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois, and showed an interest in drawing and writing at a very young age. He honed his talents and became a published cartoonist during the 1950s in the military newspaper Pacific Stars and Stripes. Not long after that, he began writing songs. He is most famous for penning Johnny Cash’s hit song “A Boy Named Sue,” which earned Silverstein a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1969.
In the beginning, Silverstein mainly catered his work toward adult audiences, thinking he wasn’t cut out for children’s literature. However, this changed in 1963 when his friend Tomi Ungerer convinced him to give it a try. The Giving Tree came soon after, as well as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and more. As they say, the rest is history…

Holiday Elves Stamps

The Holiday Elves Stamps art features an original digital illustration of four elves preparing treats and toys for holiday gift giving. The artist first sketched his design and then created the final illustration digitally. Working with a simple color palette of red, white, and shades of green and brown, he evokes the holiday spirit in the playful, happy scene.
Like many beloved yet relatively modern holiday traditions—including Santa Claus himself—elves did not become a well-established part of the holidays in the United States until the 19th century.
Published in 1823, the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”—better known as“Twas the Night Before Christmas”—refers to Santa as“a jolly old elf”but there is no mention of other elves. Louisa May Alcott might have been the first to mention Santa’s helpers, in an unpublished story collection called Christmas Elves in 1855, but few details of the lost work are known. In 1857, Harper’s Weekly published the poem“The Wonders of Santa Claus”that specifically referred to elves helping Santa create all the gifts he delivers to good children during the holidays. The 1873 Christmas issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular magazine, pictured Santa Claus, surrounded by elves and toys, preparing for the big day.
In the 20th century, Norman Rockwell, Haddon Sundblom, and other artists featured elves in some of their popular seasonal illustrations. Holiday Elves were pictured as tiny, pointy-eared, jolly creatures, usually dressed in stocking caps and festive outfits and always busy with chores for Santa—just as we envision them today.
Don Clark was the stamps designer and artist. Antonio Alcalá was the art director.

Pony Cars Stamps

In the 1960s, pony cars ruled America’s roads and racetracks. As younger drivers were looking for fast, affordable, sporty cars, auto manufacturers competed for their business and attention, sparking the fierce pony car wars.
The Plymouth Barracuda was the first pony car available for sale (two weeks before the Ford Mustang), but it didn’t sell well. Released on April 17, 1964, the Ford Mustang was an instant hit. Ford expected to sell 100,000 in their first year. They sold over one million Mustangs within two years. The Mustang shattered sales records and it wasn’t long before its competitors joined in the race.
The Mustang was followed by the Chevy Camaro, Mercury Cougar, and AMC Javelin in 1967 and Dodge unveiled its Challenger in 1969. The term pony car was coined by Car Life magazine, which described the cars as sporty, compact, and for the masses, with a long hood, short deck, and affordable price. Pony cars were also highly customizable. With a wide range of available features, paint colors, and trim stylings, these cars could be as unique as their drivers.
Manufacturers pitted their cars against one another in a variety of races, most notably the Trans-Am Series. Pushing the idea of “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday,” these races helped increase sales across the country. Before long, enthusiastic drivers were staging their own street races, testing out the pony cars’ abilities for themselves.

The artist started with digital studies, then created the finished stamp art with oils on the panel. School Bus Stamps

In the early days, the only way most children could get to school was by walking. Halfway through the 19th century, that began to change with the introduction of “kid hacks.” These were horse-drawn carriages designed to carry children to school. They were primitive and didn’t have much protection from the elements, but they marked the beginning of the history of school buses.
The first “horseless” school bus was produced by Wayne Works in 1914. Five years later, the use of school buses was funded in all 48 US states. Buses went through a number of innovations in the next twenty years or so. By the 1930s, the design had pretty much settled to the style we know today. For decades, women’s athletic programs were all but invisible on college and university campuses, receiving very little of the funding and none of the recognition of their male counterparts. In 1972, Congress amended federal education law by adding Title IX, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex from any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
By 1985, female soccer players were finally able to compete on an international level. That year the U.S. women’s national team played its first official matches in Italy. In 1991, the U.S. women’s national soccer team competed in the first official FIFA Women’s World Cup, held in China, and won the championship.
Despite these successes, women’s soccer remained relatively unknown. It didn’t truly enter the international arena and gain a following until the 1996 Summer Olympics when women’s soccer was included as a sport for the first time. The U.S. beat out China for the gold medal.
Since then, dozens of elite female athletes have donned the U.S. women’s national soccer team jersey and dominated around the world. In 2019, the U.S. made history as the only team to win four FIFA Women’s World Cup titles.
